Moving to Tomball TX: SH 249, the Grand Parkway and Old Town

Relocating to Tomball TX: how SH 249, the Grand Parkway and FM 2920 connect to Houston, The Woodlands, IAH and the Energy Corridor, and how to plan the move.

Tomball combines a small-town core with fast-growing subdivisions along two major highways. Many people relocating here like that mix: Old Town Tomball's shops and depot on one side, master-planned communities and easy highway access on the other. Use the Tomball TX real estate hub for listings and local tools.

    Getting around

    • Downtown Houston: SH 249 southeast to Beltway 8 or I-45.
    • The Woodlands: the Grand Parkway (SH 99) east toward I-45, or FM 2978.
    • George Bush Intercontinental Airport: FM 1960 east or the Grand Parkway to the Hardy Toll Road.
    • Energy Corridor: the Grand Parkway southwest to US 290 and on toward I-10, or Beltway 8 west and south.

SH 249 continues northwest beyond Tomball toward Todd Mission. Check TxDOT's DriveTexas map for current construction on your route.

    Learn the local landscape

Spend time in Old Town Tomball around the restored train depot, drive FM 2920 at rush hour, and visit both an established neighborhood and a newer community such as Amira, which Johnson Development describes as a 554-acre master-planned community. If you want land, drive the roads north and west of town, where acreage is more common.

    County and services

The City of Tomball is in Harris County. Some Tomball addresses are in Montgomery County. Your appraisal district, tax rate and services depend on the exact address, so check it on HCAD or MCAD. Acreage properties may have a private well and septic system rather than city utilities.

    What the market looks like

Redfin reports a Tomball median sale price of $384,817 for the three months ending September 2026, with 68 median days on market and 72 homes sold in September 2026 (Redfin, accessed October 31, 2026). Longer market times can work in a relocating buyer's favor: more time to see homes, and more room on terms.

    Line up the dates

Plan the start date, your current home's sale or lease end and your Tomball closing as one schedule. If you own now, the seller net sheet and home equity assessment show what you have to work with. A leaseback or short-term rental can cover a gap.

    A first week in Tomball

After closing, confirm which electric, water, trash and internet providers serve your exact address. Homes inside city limits use city services, while homes outside may rely on a utility district, well or septic system. Register vehicles and update your driver license address within the time Texas allows. Change the locks, find the water shutoff and the breaker panel, and keep your inspection report handy for system ages. File your homestead exemption with HCAD once you own and live in the home as your principal residence.

    Common relocation questions

Is Tomball in Harris County or Montgomery County?

The City of Tomball is in Harris County, and the wider Tomball area extends north into Montgomery County. Check every address on the HCAD or MCAD site.

Can I buy before I arrive?

Many relocating buyers do, using video tours, a remote inspection walkthrough and a mail-away or remote online closing where the title company offers it. A single scouting trip to drive commutes is still worth it.

    Should I rent first?

If your timing is uncertain, a short lease lets you learn the area before you choose between in-town, subdivision and acreage living.

    What about utilities on acreage?

Confirm the electric provider, internet service and trash pickup at the specific address, since they vary outside the city.
